What Is Ministry and the Purpose of Ministry?
The word ministry is often used in the Christian community and faith-based conversations, but what does it truly mean?
Is it limited to preaching or pastoral work, or is there more to it? In this article, we 'll explore the meaning of ministry, its biblical foundation, and how every believer is called to serve in some capacity.
The Biblical Meaning of Ministry
At its core, ministry comes from the Greek word diakonia, which means service. Ministry is about implementing the agenda of God, here on earth, through service to God and others.
Mark 10:45: "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many."
Who Is Called to Ministry?
Every believer is called to ministry in some form. You don't need a title or position to serve God. Ministry happens wherever you use your gifts to meet the needs of others and point them to Christ. 1 Peter 4:10 "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms." Ministry isn't confined to the pulpit; it encompasses any act of service done in obedience to God's will; and becoming a vessel God uses to carry out His larger assignment here on earth.
