10 Things to Consider When Receiving Prophetic Words: IAUC Guide to Discerning the Genuineness of Prophetic Words

By IAUC Admin

In the spiritual journey, prophetic words can be powerful tools for encouragement, guidance, and confirmation. However, not all prophetic words are real or false. Some may come from God, while others may be influenced by human emotions, personal agendas, or even deceptive spirits. As believers, it’s crucial to exercise discernment when receiving prophetic words.

Here are 10 key considerations to help you navigate this process

1. Is This God Speaking? What Are the Fruits?

The first question to ask is whether the prophetic word aligns with God’s character and nature. Jesus said, By their fruits, you will know them” (Matthew 7:16). A genuine prophetic word will always bear good fruit and point you closer to God.

2. Is This Genuine, or Is It Faked?

Unfortunately, not all prophetic words are authentic. Some may be fabricated or exaggerated for attention or personal gain. Test the spirit behind the word (1 John 4:1). Does it feel forced or overly dramatic? Genuine prophecy is rooted in humility , God's power, and sincerity, not manipulation or showmanship.

3. Is This Prophesied from Publicly-Available Information?

Sometimes, a prophetic word” may simply be a regurgitation of information the speaker already knows about you, or has seen somewhere online. Be cautious if the word feels generic or based on obvious details. True prophecy often reveals something only God could know, offering specific insight or confirmation.

4. Does the Prophecy Lead Me Back to God, or Does It Connect Me Back to the Giver?

A true prophetic word will always point you toward God, not the person delivering it. If the word seems to elevate the giver or create dependency on them, it may be a red flag. Prophecy should draw you closer to Jesus, not to a human intermediary.

5. Does the Prophecy Exalt the Giver?

Beware of prophetic words that seem to glorify the speaker rather than God. If the giver is using the prophecy to showcase their own spiritual gifts or authority, it may not be genuine. True prophets operate in humility, giving all glory to God.

6. Is It a Show or Staged Performance, or Is There Holiness at Work?

Authentic prophecy is not about entertainment or theatrics. If the delivery feels like a performance—complete with dramatic gestures or exaggerated emotions—it may lack the holiness and reverence that accompany true prophetic ministry.

7. Is It in Alignment with What God Has Been Speaking to Me?

God often speaks to us in consistent themes over time. Compare the prophetic word with what God has already been revealing to you through prayer, Scripture, and other means. If it contradicts what you know to be true, it may not be from God.

8. Is the Giver Looking at Your Face for Validation or Confirmation?

A genuine prophet will deliver the word with confidence, trusting that God will confirm it in your heart. If the giver seems overly concerned with your reaction or seeks immediate validation, it could indicate insecurity or a lack of authenticity.

9. Is the Giver a Member of a Cult or Group That Platforms Fake Prophets?

Be mindful of the source. If the giver is associated with a group or movement known for false teachings or manipulative practices, exercise caution. Research their background and affiliations to ensure they are rooted in sound doctrine and integrity.

10. Is This Man-Made Prophecy?

Finally, ask yourself if the word feels inspired by God or crafted by human effort. Man-made prophecy often lacks spiritual depth and may feel vague, flattering, or self-serving. True prophecy carries the weight of God’s presence and authority.

 The Importance of Discernment

Receiving a prophetic word can be a profound and life-changing experience, but it’s essential to approach it with wisdom and discernment. Not every word labeled as prophetic” is from God, and even well-meaning individuals can miss the mark.

The ultimate test of any prophetic word is its alignment with Scripture and its ability to draw you closer to God. As 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21 reminds us, Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good.”
